Green Building Incentive Trends: Strengthening Communities, Building Green Economies
by: Sustainable Design News, 2012-03-04 03:09:47 UTC
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the National Association of Counties (NACo) released a report that finds that the most attractive incentives for greening American communities are also the most basic: tax incentives, density/floor area ratio bonuses and expedited permitting.
The report also found that communities should select incentives based primarily on a local government's financial situation and desired impact on the construction industry. And, the simpler the policy, the more likely for it to be implemented successfully, the report concludes.

Pratima Kalra:
While cities around the world are all set to upgrade themselves for a sustainable status by spending colossal amounts of money, Companies like Bridgelux and Chevron are out there with a brand new idea of modernizing infrastructure by financing projects through energy savings. The two have collaborated to upgrade street lights with LED lighting and the whole project endeavors to highlight the benefits of LED lighting in cities.

Bridgelux-Chevron deal brings LED streetlights to cities.
Whereas Bridgelux is a producer of LEDs; Chevron Energy Solutions develops projects related to solar power and other energy conserving technologies. Thus, their collaboration seems but obvious and fruit bearing.
The project in totality is meant for municipalities that will switch over to the use of LED lighting. LEDS are definitely more long lasting and energy efficient and require no upfront costs. There maintenance cost of the system would be minimal, thus allowing good monthly savings that will be used for financing the project.
At present cities like Dublin, Calif, etc. are ready to test their streets with this lighting system and if successful, Bridgelux will expand the scope of expansion. Both the companies believe that this project is not an end in itself, but a new beginning. It has the capability of inspire new business models and maybe soon such this way of financing would be replicated for homes, corporation houses, etc.

Lok shower panel makes you more considerate while using water
by: The Design blog, 2012-03-03 13:27:25 UTC
Shallu Sharma:
Our habit of using water lavishly has forced us to think about ways of saving water as it is one of the major problems our planet is facing nowadays. Adding to the problem are people habitual of bathing for 15 to 20 minutes as there is no logical rationale behind such water wastage. In an effort to resolve the problem, designer Alan Javier has created a shower panel christened as Lok that helps in lowering the showering time to just 5 minutes. It comes with an analog timer to keep track of the time spent showering, which could be activated by pulling the knob to begin the countdown.

Lok features a customizable grid system for easy and quick access of the things you need while showering to save time as well as water. You can insert add-ons to the grid to keep your stuff approachable according to your stature. It also features a low flow shower head, which uses only 2.2 gallons of water per minute. The shower panel is crafted using chrome that adds to its style and makes it an attractive part of your bathroom.
To use it you just have to slide the knob to the extreme right to begin the countdown. Knob slides back to indicate that the time is running out and you need to hurry up. But even if time runs out shower won’t turn off, so no need to worry about being left half cleansed. This customizable shower has nothing to do with water supply and it just serves as a reminder of the time spent bathing. The idea behind visual representation of time is to make people more considerate and responsible while consuming water.
