U.K. Gets Vending Machines for Recycling Batteries, Light Bulbs
by: Eco Geek Latest, 2011-12-14 21:25:10 UTC
We all know that batteries and CFL light bulbs don't belong in the trash, but recycling locations are not always convenient. What if your local retail stores just had a vending machine where you could drop these items? Well, that convenient option could be coming to us soon.
A company called reVend Recycling Ltd. has begun installing recycling vending machines for light bulbs and batteries in the U.K. that not only sort the items, but offer immediate rewards.
The first pilot machine was installed at an IKEA in London with great success. At that location, recyclers were offered store credit to IKEA based on the amount they were recycling or the choice to donate to one of four charities -- the World Wildlife Fund, Woodland Trust, UNICEF and Save the Children.
The machines accept incandescents, CFLs and LEDs as well as any domestic batteries. The machines are able to track the bulbs and batteries by type, manufacturer and volume so that each can end up in the appropriate recycling facilities.
The company has signed an agreement with IKEA to install their machines throughout the U.K., Germany and Denmark. They plan to expand their reach to more parts of Europe as well as into the U.S. very soon.

Sustainable Streetlamp
by: Yanko Design, 2011-12-14 08:02:02 UTC
Sculptural sidewalk element by day and super-efficient streetlamp by night, the Windtulip is a great example of one of the many changes we can make in our public areas in order to reach environmental sustainability. Harnessing the power of the wind, compact turbines generate and transmit energy from transformer to battery before the lamp’s light-sensors activate the LED.

Domestic 3D Printing
by: Yanko Design, 2011-12-15 08:01:51 UTC
This DIY 3D printer design combines many features seen on other popular printers but features an exterior casing of molded plastic and wood veneer that is aesthetically more suitable for use at home. An optional iPhone connection also offers a quick read of statistics, progress, temperature and other data. It’s a glimpse into what the take-home 3D printer of the future might look like if/when they are ever available. Fingers crossed!

Not For Arachnophobes
by: Yanko Design, 2011-12-15 08:02:10 UTC
Even if you’re afraid of spiders, there’s no denying the beauty of this unique pendant lamp. Webster is made completely out of hot-glue strands using a dab-and-stretch technique (and a whole lotta patience!). The countless strands form an intricate orb that diffuses the light, reducing glare and softening the ambient glow. Do want!

by: Inhabitat , 2011-12-14 20:30:32 UTC
Quimperié’s Luxury MIG 675 is a hydrogen-powered boat that harvests fuel directly from the water beneath it as it zips across the waves. The high-tech 22-foot-long boat has seats for three and it tops out at 70 mph. It’s quite the zippy, zero-emissions ride, and it has a price tag to match – it retails for $329,727. Check out video proof of the boat’s speed after the jump!
