Why are Indians splurging on green goods?
by: Ecofriend, 2014-01-05 10:20:35 UTC
Studies suggest that more and more Indians are consuming and splurging on green goods. The green wave is sweeping the entire nation. What exactly is the reason?
Why are Indians splurging on green goods?
Indians are increasingly evolving as the leaders in consumption of green products. Let’s find out how and what has made this possible.
- An awareness? – Studies and surveys according to the Greendex suggest that Indians lead more healthy and sustainable lives than anyone else. However the paradox remains true that Indians think that most of the eco-awareness sweep is mostly hogwash and exaggerated. In fact 40% os the population feel this way. The reason why Indians have eco-friendly lifestyles is more because of cultural factors which suggest that should be sensitive to the environment rather than concerns of global warming. The perception that environmental problems are exaggerated may however lead to a barrier in effective action.
- Corporate social responsibility – A study carried out by Nielsen via internet in 58 countries saw Indians top the list with three-quarters saying that they are willing to shell out more money for green goods. Nielsen suggests the study goes on to show that the government bill making corporate social responsibility a mandate for many companies is working out to be a positive step . More and more businesses are giving it as much importance as any other function in their organization. On the other hand, many European Union countries lagged behind in this aspect due to their cynicism to keep businesses and environment separate.
- Adopting healthier lifestyles – Indians are growing increasingly aware of natural and organic foods by the hour. A lot of Indian food is laden with spices and Indians are aware that although the food might taste good, a lot of nutrients are lost in preparing such food. Indians want to maintain healthier lifestyles and work on their body structures by eating right. They are consuming organic products more and know well to look for labels and certifications.
- Expanding middle class – The rapid expansion of the middle class might be termed as another factor in the growing splurge of green goods in India. The middle class makes most of the rules in the country . The people of this section of the society and their change and increase in purchasing power is another important factor. People do not mind paying more for goods if they are green. They just look at it as a healthier option of life rather than an expense.

Mala Carpet: Incredible Design for a Great Cause
by: design milk, 2014-01-13 14:00:01 UTC
Nothing makes me happier than mixing great design with a wonderful cause and that’s just what describes designer Madeline Weinrib’s latest endeavor. Weinrib designed the Mala Carpet for Project Mala, a non-profit organization that works to build schools in the carpet-weaving region of India with hopes of eliminating child labor. 100% of the rug’s proceeds go to the cause, which builds and operates the schools while also providing two meals per day, healthcare, clothing and shoes, and school supplies. We’re happy to report, it looks like there are only a few left so hurry!
Inspired by vintage Moroccan carpets with plush textures and distinctive patterns, Weinrib designed the natural and black carpet with her signature graphic touch. The carpet is made from 100% New Zealand wool and is hand-knotted.

Design's Next Big Frontier? Shaping Behavior In Real Time
by: Co.Design, 2014-01-10 16:30:00 UTC
If CES proved anything, it's that designers finally have the tools to truly influence behavioral patterns. Watch out, world.
Other than Michael Bay's already legendary meltdown, the hottest topics of discussion at this year's Consumer Electronics Show are largely wearable and connected. In part, this is just an outcome of consumer expectations: a wearable device is the next step smaller than a smartphone, and we now have the tiny technology to make it work. But after a long morning examining smart bracelets, smart watches, smart headgear, and smart sporting goods on the CES show floor, it's clear that there's a much deeper potential hidden in the cracks. This is because small devices with embedded intelligence can do more than just measure; they're showing their potential to change the way we act.

These Smart Streetlights Only Get Bright When They're Needed
by: Co.Exist, 2014-01-09 16:37:00 UTC
Cities spend massive amounts of money on electricity to light the street. But most of the time no one is there. This smart technology can sense when a car or pedestrian is approaching.
As much as half of a city's electricity bill is from simply powering streetlights. Now a Dutch company's design for smart street lights, which brighten only when needed, might help save massive amounts of that energy.
