Research has shown the benefits of keeping indoor plants. They purify the air of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) that are responsible for lots of health problems and are emitted from the products we use and keep in our environment. Plants also balance out too much or to little humidity in their surrounding. Not every one however is blessed with green fingers or is around enough to water them regularly. And since the production of house plants and flowers is also not always very sustainable in the sense of energy, pesticides, transportation, you want to make sure the plants stay alive.
House of Thol’s designers Thomas Linssen and Jana Flohr recognized the problem first hand when not even the most resilient plants survived their care and designed the elegant watering system Waterworks, based on the water diffusing capabilities of terra cotta. The water container is made of a handblown glass container which is put on top of the terra cotta stake to provide as much water as the plant needs which depends not only on the plant but also on how light, hot or dry the surrounding is. It needs to be filled when empty, typically once a week or so.
They prototyped and tested and won funding to produce the first series at Dutch Design Starter . Congratulations!
