Green Homes Currently a $17 B Market
by: Jetson Green, 2012-02-13 07:44:14 UTC
Green homes comprised 17%, or $17 billion, of the overall residential construction market in 2011, according to new findings in the Green Home Builders and Remodelers Study by McGraw-Hill Construction. Mc-Graw Hill predicts green homes will gain market share over the next few years to between 29-38% of the market by 2016 — a market that could equate to $87-114 billion by these forecasts.
Additionally, 34% of remodelers expect to be doing mostly green work by 2016.
Factors that contribute to the growth of the green homes market include “higher quality” and “increases in energy costs,” while obstacles continue to be “higher perceived first costs” and “lack of consumer education.“ Builders guesstimate that the premium to build green is about 7%, according to McGraw-Hill Construction.
Areas with the highest growth in green homes include, first, the West Coast, second, the Midwest northern region west of the Mississippi, and third, the New England area.
Notwithstanding a brutal housing economy, “green has grown significantly as a share of activity— indicating that the green market is becoming an important part of our overall economic landscape,” said Harvey M. Bernstein, VP of Industry Insights and Alliances, McGraw-Hill Construction.
As the housing economy begins to, perhaps, come back a little from recent doldrums, 33% of builders and 22% of remodelers expect to be dedicated to green building work by 2016.

Robot make furniture from recycled refrigerator parts
by: Ecofriend, 2012-02-13 06:46:18 UTC
Rahul Gupta:
There are many designers who are recreating various useful items with different recycling techniques. But, recently a Dutch designer, named Dirk Vander Kooij, came up with the idea of building furniture out of recycled refrigerators. More interestingly the process of making such furniture is done entirely by a robot.

The designer was studying wood at the Wood and Furniture College, but eventually was more intrigued with the use of synthetic material when he went to Eindhoven. He was inspired by old printer while he was graduating. The whole process of making recycled furniture starts by crushing the old refrigerators parts and making a thick paste out of it. Then the thick paste is filled in a machine, which creates furniture out of it. When the designer made this product the first time he named it, ‘The Elephant Skin Stool’ of recycled material.
According to the designer the furniture was showcased last year at the Graduation Show of the Design Academy Eindhoven. There he told people that these robots are capable of making about 4000 chairs yearly and each piece of furniture is customized and comes loaded with functionality. The designer chairs made by robots are priced between $ 635.52 to $1297.52 and you also get a great variety of colors to choose from.

Chevy's EcoLogic Label Goes Beyond MPG
by: Eco Geek Latest, 2012-02-10 18:57:31 UTC
While the EPA mandated window sticker on a new car is a familiar feature, and we have become well acquainted with the testing that gives us comparative MPG (or now MPGe) ratings, those metrics are only one portion of how green a car may be considered. Other factors that are being taken into account with products like computers, consumer electronics and cell phones are now also being given consideration with the introduction of the EcoLogic label Chevrolet is putting on its cars, starting with the 2012 Sonic and extending to all Chevrolet vehicles in 2013.
The EcoLogic label provides a third-party verified review of the company's claims about other factors surrounding the materials and performance of the vehicle.
The Sonic example label (PDF) lists information about "Fuel-Saving Technology," "End-of-Life Recyclability," and "Responsible Management" and then notes the particular features the car has in these categories and explains how each is accomplished. As with the EPA's improved window stickers, more information will help consumers make better, more informed choices.

Asmita Prasad:
One of the main causes of occupational diseases is work related stress, which is in turn caused by long working hours. However, work related stress can be reduced and productivity can be increased by positively utilizing correct relaxation and management methods. The DayBrake Personal Stress Manager Concept by Auckland, NZ based designer Jet Shao proposes using bio feedback sensors to monitor and manage user’s stress level. The concept basically breaks the monotony of a long stressful work day into small sections by providing non-intrusive intervention to facilitate passive stress management.
DayBrake Personal Stress Manager
Some amount of stress is desirable to keep workers alert and attentive towards their work though a buildup of stress over a period of time can adversely affect health and concentration also. The DayBrake Personal Stress Manager Concept keeps track of physical markers of stress buildup like increase in heart rate and skin temperature and every time these scores reach a certain level, the system alerts them and notifies them to take a break. The system is also geared to provide physical and mental relaxation via a pleasurable neck massage that follows the principals of Feng chi and traditional Chinese acupressure therapies to instantly relieve stress buildup in the neck and shoulders.

The device features a bio feedback function which monitors user’s stress level through biological response of human body to negative stress like abnormal raise in heart rate and skin temperature. The data collected will be compared to a normal productive stress level to accurately indicate the rise in negative stress. When it senses abnormal stress level, it will send a feedback to the user with a pleasurable sensation of mild neck massage to advice the user to take a break.
Since it incorporates the Chinese traditional pressure point massage, the DayBrake Personal Stress Manager is perfectly safe for use with people of all ages regardless of their health status and people do not need to consult a medical practitioner before they can use this device. By massaging the two set of pressure point behind the neck area, the system provides the most effective stress relief and relaxation.
The system also offers positive suggestion and serves as a guide that aids users towards complete relaxation by helping them enter a deep state of meditation. A choice of personal music, white noise or various meditation aids are also offered to the user who can connect the device to their earphones via Bluetooth.
