World record 1,626 miles on one tank of diesel
by: Gizmag Emerging Technology Magazine, 2012-05-10 06:46:50 UTC
Apparently not happy with collecting over 40 world driving fuel economy records, the husband and wife team of
John and Helen Taylor – also known as “the world’s most fuel efficient couple” – have been back on the road to claim the world record for the longest distance traveled on a single tank of fuel. The record 1,626.1 mile (2,616.95 km) journey was achieved in a stock 2012 Volkswagen Passat powered by a 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel inline four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission...

'Etcher' turns iPad into Etch A Sketch -- real knobs and all

OK, there's an Etch A Sketch. But what's "Etcher"?

When we first landed on the Kickstarter page for "Etcher," a project that bills itself as "Etch A Sketch for iPad," we looked at the initial frame of the not-yet-playing promo video and thought, "OK, there's the Etch A Sketch, but what's Etcher? Just some silly app that pops a virtual Etch A Sketch onto your touch screen and lets you twiddle the dials with your fingertips? Show us the product."
D'oh (and wow): we were looking right at it.
Etcher's not some sort of digital-only re-creation. As you'll see once you hit Play on the video (embedded below), Etcher gobbles up the iPad and converts it into the classic Ohio Arts dial-and-draw toy, real knobs and all. But it also takes advantage of the iPad's 21st century technological magic to bring features to the Etch A Sketch that were pretty much unimaginable with the original toy.

Samsung has announced that its ES9500 OLED TV will launch in South Korea in the second half of 2012 at a price equivalent to $9,000 U.S.
The TV, formally known as the Samsung Super OLED, will retail for 10 million won ($8,760 U.S.) and is expected to compete with LG's own OLED panel, the EM9600. The LG is also due in 2012 and won CNET's BEST of CES 2012 award.
OLED (organic light-emitting diode) is a display technology that could potentially outperform the picture quality of best LCD and plasma TVs of today. It's currently featured in mobile devices such as the Samsung Galaxy SII and the Sony PS Vita.

Biomimetic Design: Stunt Lizard's Tail Has Robotic Vehicle Applications
by: Core77, 2012-05-09 21:00:00 UTC
Dr. Robert J. Full is a professor at UC Berkeley's Department of Integrative Biology, and I guarantee that his job title doesn't prepare you for what he actually does. "My primary interests reside in the area of comparative biomechanics and physiology," he writes. "[My research program seeks] general design principles for species which have evolved different solutions to the problems of locomotion and activity in general."
One of those species is that lizard with the bad-ass coloring up above. The Agama lizard, as it's called, has a very long tail:
Full's research observed something surprising about how this particular lizard uses its tail, and realized it could be adapted for a wheeled robotic vehicle needing to pull some crazy stunt-type maneuvers. This video will show you what we can't in photos, and be sure to check out the slow-mo at 0:45. (You'll also catch a glimpse, at 2:28, of what I consider to be a terrifying cheetah-based robot by DARPA and Boston Dynamics.)
