In a bid to prove its commitment to creating sustainably produced products, iconic sports brand Nike has created a new football cleat called the Nike GS which is being touted as being the most eco-friendly shoe the company has ever produced. Throughout its body, the boot features renewable and recycled materials. The lightweight shoe weighs just 160 gms which makes it the fastest as well as the lightest shoe made by the company so far.

Polyester and recycled water bottles were among the reused plastics used to create the tongue, lining and laces of the shoe, over 70 percent of which is composed of these materials. Composed of 97 percent castor beans, a plant-based material called Pebax® Renu is used to create the shoe’s traction plate. This material is over 50 percent renewable.

The production process involved in making Kangaroo leather in the Nike GS also emits 35 percent less carbon that a process that uses traditional materials. Since castor beans require much less water to grow that other natural fibers, the overall environmental cost of making the shoes is also lowered. These cleats are also chemical free.
However, what makes the Nike GS such a great shoe for the average footballer is the fact that they are up to 15 percent lighter than traditional cleats thanks to the use of castor beans. Apart from the low environmental footprint, these cleats can also deliver high performance under the most pressing conditions.

Just 2012 copies of the limited edition Nike GS football cleats will be manufactured and will be available via the company’s online shop beginning August 15th at a price of $300.

Self-proclaimed “design activist” and a designer based in New York City, Stephen Burks is championing the adoption of traditional crafts into the realms of modern design to ensure that these arts are preserved and develop as a part of the natural progression of design. The aim of Burks’ activism is to develop a way to enable artisans and communities dependant on the production of these craftworks to benefit socio-economically from the upliftment of these designs from the niche genre of “art and crafts” into legitimately mainstream design. To reinvent local handicrafts and introduce them into contemporary furniture design, Burks has created the DALA outdoor furniture collection.

The word DALA itself is the Senegalese term for the verb “to make” and the collection draws inspiration from handicrafts and other traditional artistic influences of the region. The collection was created as a collaborative effort between Burks and Dedon, the German furniture company. The DALA collection was recently showcased at the Design Week in Milan.

Each piece in the DALA collection is shaped to resemble traditional craftwork though interestingly enough; Burks also combined these pieces with his love of recycling. The collection, thus, comes woven around a frame of powered aluminum with the exterior being fashioned using recyclable extrude polyethylene and recycled packaging used in the food-and-drink industry. The collection is offered in three hues- Sea, Grass and Fire.
Israeli industrial designer Omer Inbar recently sent us details about his latest project, the "Bug Light." The insect-inspired desk lamp comes in three models: a spider, ant and praying mantis. Simple though they may be, each one seems to have a surprising amount of personality for inanimate (and entomologically inaccurate) objects.
The light bulb itself might be considered as the 'customizable' component of the "Bug Light," though I'd hesitate to stick anything stronger than 40W in an unshaded fixture...
Still, I can't help but think that "Bug Light" would be a near-perfect example of a DIY project for less than $10 worth of parts, with bent clotheshangers or pipe cleaners for legs (or, if you're slightly more refined, a wire bender). Hell, even the packaging—which has holes punched in it, so that its contents might 'breathe'—could be made from a small shoebox. Which is not a criticism so much as a suggestion to sell it as a kit for tinker-inclined tots... for whom the parts are not a choking hazard, of course.
Japan’s Modi-Corp has just unveiled a new electric car called the Pius that you can actually build yourself!
