Loom Pendant Lamps Woven From Recycled Polyester Bedding
by: Inhabitat , 2011-03-25 16:25:24 UTC
These smoothly sculpted Loom pendant lamps are made from a new woven organic polyester material developed by Benjamin Hubert for Swedish manufacturer Zero. The polyester was originally sourced from the bedding industry, and the finished textile is surprisingly versatile — it is strong enough to be stretched around complex forms, but transparent enough to diffuse the light through its dense network of fibers. The lovely lamps offer a new spin on traditional Chinese lanterns, making them a perfect way to add a soft source of light to any space.

Ford Investigates Bubble Technology to Make Cars 10% Lighter, More Efficient
by: Inhabitat , 2011-03-25 17:06:35 UTC
Ford Motors is looking into a new technology produced at MIT labs that could make cars lighter and more fuel-efficient by injecting micro bubbles into plastic components. The technology, which is now owned by Trexel, is called MuCell and revolves around the controlled injection of gas, such as carbon or nitrogen, into the injection molding process of plastic. By inserting millions of non-uniform bubbles into plastic parts, the plastic becomes much lighter while still maintaining its durability and performance.

Elektra One Electric Plane Successfully Completes Maiden Flight
by: Inhabitat , 2011-03-25 23:39:34 UTC
We’re excited to announce that the Elektra One electric airplane has just successfully completed its first and second flights in Augsburg, Germany! Developed by Calin Gologan, the electric aircraft endured a 30 minute emission-free flight. The Elektra One climbed to a height of 1,640 feet at 400 feet per minute, and it handled very well according to test pilots Jon Karkow and Norbert Lorenzen. It also only expended three kilowatt-hours of the total stored six kilowatt-hours available.

Hamster Ball-Shaped Solarball Uses the Sun to Purify Water
by: Inhabitat , 2011-03-24 17:56:01 UTC
While you might mistake designer Jonathan Liow’s Solarball for a familiar hamster’s toy, it’s actually a really cool new product for humans that purifies water using the sun. The Monash University graduate’s project is specifically geared towards aiding residents of underdeveloped areas with no clean drinking water, particularly small villages in Africa.

Jose Agatep’s Beautiful Repurposed Bottles Terrariums are Self-Contained Ecosystems
by: Inhabitat , 2011-03-24 20:20:10 UTC
Artist Jose Agatep gathers glass containers of various shapes and transforms them into incredible terrariums filled with locally grown plants, wild mosses, small stones, soil, and wood chips collected from nearby forests and train tracks. His Philadelphia-based shop The Slug and the Squirrel is enchanted with all sorts of repurposed vases, bottles, and jars found at flea-markets. According to Agatep, the tiny self-contained ecosystems offer “a journey to ancient connections that once existed between humans and plants”.

From Sprawl Crawl,By GOOD and Atley Kasky
The USA Today headline states the obvious:
City's design, transit system can ease gas costs, noting that "a recent study finds that people drive less in compact cities that have extensive transportation systems." And why is a six month old report news today? Gas prices; the more you drive, the more you pay.
But what isn't so obvious is what the car is used for; It isn't for the commute to work. Carol Coletta, President of
