The Plumen 001 is the first energy saving light bulb. Not the LED but CFL version of energy efficient, like the tube lighting.
The energy saving light bulb is a neglected, yet inspiring invention. It uses 80% less energy than the traditional incandescent light bulb, keeps down electricity bills and is better for the environment. It also lasts around 8 times longer. The bulb contains mercury but so does energy production and this equals it more then out. You need however separately recycle them as chemical waste like batteries, whether they are rechargeable or not.
Plumen suggests we only buy energy saving bulbs out of moral obligation. To some the problem is the light they give off, to others it is the way they look. Both can be solved.
They believe the answer is in the design. Make the bulb attractive and people will spend a bit more and enjoy a better quality of light and a design they appreciate every day. Glass tubes can be bent is many different shapes so why are there thousands of manufacturers but only three designs? Plumen aims to address the problem.
The name comes from ‘plume’ – a bird’s show feather, designed to attract attention to a bird’s prowess and beauty.
The bulb is also available for 110V and with a bayonet fitting
Modern LED’s also save the problem by offering energy saving bulbs in all kind of colors as well as dim-able but I must agree, this is fun. And are we not looking for more fun stuff?
And we have found it. In collaboration with Foreverlamp, and considering the present relevance of this topic, Alessi decided to draw on a particularly fresh design perspective working with young designers Giovanni Alessi Anghini, Gabriele Chiave and Frederic Gooris.
All LED for 37 Euro/pc with european electricity tariffs it pays back in less then 3 years. And this one lasts upto 25 years.
