Paper is a cellulose non-woven and has therefor similar characteristics as cotton and viscose. Textiles made form paper can be crisp, translucent, lightweight and often make wonderful rustling sounds when worn. No wonder it is used in wedding dresses!
It doesn’t fray and edges don’t need finishing. At the end of it’s life it is recyclable and can be transformed in new fabric or paper.
It is very versatile; it can be knitted and be pliable; when densely woven it can hold it’s shape.
In the 60’s it was used as a disposable material for clothing like underwear but nowadays nonwoven and technological papers are used by textile and fashion designers.
Sarajevo student-designer Amila Hrustic finds inspiration in the ancient branch of mathematics. “Plato’s Collection,” an assortment of origami-esque dresses made from paper and textiles, is a mass of edges, vertices, and faces, with each dress corresponding to one of the five Platonic solids (the tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron, icosahedron).
