Egyptian teenagers are on a roll lately – if they’re not proposing the next-generation of space propulsion systems, then they’re figuring out how to use the country’s plastic waste for fuel! Sixteen-year-old Azza Abdel Hamid Faiad has found that an inexpensive catalyst could be used to create $78 million worth of biofuel each year. Egypt’s plastic consumption is estimated to total one million tons per year, so Azza’s proposal could transform the country’s economy, allowing it to make money from recycled plastic.

Prefab Aktiv Ideabox Summer in the City
by: Jetson Green, 2012-07-19 21:06:28 UTC
You may recall the Aktiv prefab by Ideabox that we mentioned a few months ago. The media picked up a thread on this modular home thinking it was an IKEA prefab but the reality is the home was built by Ideabox with a ton of IKEA products on the inside. Ideabox is running what it’s calling “Ideabox Summer in the City” with an Aktiv on display at Cascade Station in Portland (down the road from IKEA Portland). It’ll be on display through the first week in August with solar from Sunmodo and Solar World, a ductless heat pump from Fujitsu and The Heat Pump Store, and furnishings from IKEA. Aktiv is priced from $87,000 with one bedroom, one bathroom, and 745 square feet.

The Flaca LED Lamp Shines Bright With a Striking Minimalist Form
by: Inhabitat , 2012-07-18 21:00:28 UTC
Traditional reading lights are often serpentine eyesores that appear to channel the ghosts of external computer microphones or clunky bookmarks, but Masiosare Studio‘s Flaca LED lamp offers those who clamor for a more streamlined solution a sustainable way to indulge in pulp pleasures. The Flaca (which translates to “skinny” in Spanish) illuminates pages utilizing a 6-watt LED lamp, which consumes about one-fourth the energy of an incandescent bulb.
Masiosare Studio, a Mexican industrial design company, prides itself on its innovation. While the price ($74) may seem like some serious green to dole out for a booklight, it is the product’s bold and quality design that makes it worth the cost. The main structure of the light is composed entirely of stainless steel, and its razor-thin, rectangular coils unfurl to achieve a maximum extension of 14 inches.
Between its low-energy consumption, limited material waste, and sharp minimalist aesthetic, the Flaca LED Light offers environmentally-conscious readers a sustainable alternative to contemporary incandescent reading lights.
