A Chair That Turns Hoarding Into High Design
by: Co.Design, 2011-05-06 15:11:46 UTC
It’s a dirty little secret of the upwardly mobile, a problem vexing households from Park Slope to Pac Heights: You’re a modern-design junkie and a pack rat -- a
Collyer brother in an Eames lounger. There’s hope! The tangle of metal you see here is the perfect chair for compulsive hoarding in high style.
German industrial designer
Stephan Schulz calls it the Comfy Cargo Chair, which is a misnomer if ever we saw one. The thing looks about as comfortable as a bed of nails. But it is highly utilitarian. Shove your empty wine bottles in there, your plastic bags, your dirty socks, your nest of rabid squirrels -- whatever your hoardy heart desires. The impressive thing: The chair stays totally functional. Though sit at your own risk. We don’t even want to know why there's a roll of toilet paper in there.
The Comfy Cargo Chair is just a prototype, but Schulz wants to put it into production, so if you want to help out -- or if you've got any filthy-rich hoarder friends -- drop him a line at contact@studio-stephanschulz.com.

Sweet and Soft Leaf Lamp Emits a Warm and Inviting LED Glow
by: Inhabitat , 2011-05-06 19:16:53 UTC
Inspired by the lush green trees dotting the Swedish landscape, Peter Schumacher‘s Leaf Lamp is a darling design sure to add a bit of charm to any interior space. The lamp features branches and a tree trunk constructed from sustainably sourced birch, and its shade is made from a lush array of unbleached starched wool leaves. A warm-toned LED bulb shines through the foliage, providing a soft and inviting glow. For each lamp purchased, the manufacturer Green Furniture Sweden will plant a birch in the vicinity of their local production site in northern Skåne. Each lamp comes flat-packed and ready for assembly.

Zero-Waste Vegetable Packaging You Can Also Plant
by: Inhabitat , 2011-05-05 20:50:05 UTC
Are you tired of going to the store for veggies, only to come back home to find yourself with a load of useless un-eco-packaging? Overwhelmed by the wasteful nature at his local market, Ben Huttly, a Visual Communication student at the Arts University College at Bournemouth (UK), took matters into his own hands and came up with an inspired zero-waste packaging system for fruits and vegetables. Not only is Huttly’s design delightfully modern and minimal, but its is also biodegradable and can even be planted!

Thin-film flexible 'Paperphone' created
by: Gizmag Emerging Technology Magazine, 2011-05-05 22:54:25 UTC
Researchers from the Human Media Lab at Canada's Queen's University have created a fully-functioning floppy
E-Ink smartphone, which they also refer to as a paper computer. Like its thicker, rigid-bodied counterparts, the Paperphone can do things like making and receiving calls, storing e-books, and playing music. Unlike them, however, it conforms to the shape of its user's pocket or purse, and can even be operated through bending actions...

MIT SOFT Rockers lounge chairs double as clean electricity generators
by: The Design blog, 2011-05-05 12:31:26 UTC
Kirun:
SOFT Rocker, don’t mistaken it to work solely as a rocker. It would mean denying optimum use of its resources knowingly or unknowingly. It’s not just a piece of outdoor furniture to relax and chill. It is designed to harvest solar energy which can be used to charge or run the compatible USB electronic gadgets like speakers, cell phones, etc. It’s an integration of design and technology for the comfort and conveyance of mankind.
The electricity generator cum furniture is capable to create an interactive 1.5 axis 35 watt solar tracking system by employing human power of balance. Solar energy harvested during the day is stored in soft power electronics especially designed for SOFT Rocks. These electronics are also used to charge the 12 ampere-hour battery of the SOFT Rocker.
Its leaf-like loop is adaptable to the latitude and angle of Sun of any site using parametric design software and automated fabrication with a lightweight Kuka robotic arm.

Futuristic Laptop Concept Features Solar Panel Cover, Charger

A couple years ago, embedding solar cells into gadgets was all the rage among electronics designers. While that trend has fizzled out a bit, encasing electronics in a solar panel might be picking up speed. The Lifebook Leaf concept developed by Laura Karnath and Carl Burdick is a beautiful design putting solar power in the front seat. ...
