The Yeh group developed a process in which fabric is dyed by using CO2 as a medium instead of water. They concentrate on sports apparel and for instance Adidas uses the DRYDYE fabric in the THE Performance T-shirts designed by Stella McCartney made of recycled Polyesther.
Typical fabric production consumes enormous amounts of water, about 8 times the fabrics volume per production step. Adidas calculated it saves about 25 liter of water per t-shirt. On top of that about 50% of both chemicals and energy is saved. The CO2 swells the fiber and promotes penetration by the dye. Residue dye can be recovered and recycled.
