The New Material Award believes in the innovative power of creativity within various design and art disciplines with regard to sustainability and the development and application of new materials.
The prize has two distinctions: the New Material Award with a cash prize of € 15,000 for a finished product, and the New Material Fellow, for a detailed idea to which a research question has been linked.
All designers, visual artists, fashion designers and architects working in the Netherlands can submit a design. The deadline for registration is 6 July 2014. The registration form and conditions can be downloaded from their website.
A committee of experts in various disciplines will select sixteen to eighteen designs from all entries. The selected works will be on display at an exhibition at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam from 20 November 2014 through 5 January 2015. There, an expert jury of three persons will designate the winning entries. The jury will nominate the New Material Fellow on the basis of a research proposal.
The two winners will be announced on the opening day of the exhibition, on Thursday, 20 November 2014 at Het Nieuwe Instituut.
Previous years’ nominations and winning designs can be found at
www.doen-materiaalprijs.nl.
The New Material Award is the follow-up of the DOEN | Material award, which was created by the DOEN Foundation and the Materiaalfonds in 2009. In 2014, the award was given a new name and structure, with room for (continued) research in the form of a fellowship at Het Nieuwe Instituut.
The New Material Award is a collaboration between the Materiaalfonds voor Beeldende Kunst en Vormgeving, the DOEN Foundation and Het Nieuwe Instituut. The three organizations feel that artists and designers have an important role to play in initiating new developments in society and responding to current and pressing issues.
