Sustainability Aspects: Design for recycling to make it easier to recover materials in the end of life phase of products

The Story

E-waste

Electronic equipment is designed based on a number of requirements. Not only product safety, ease of use and energy efficiency but also resource efficiency and recycling play an important role. Nevertheless, the recovery of some raw materials from discarded appliances is difficult without help from the designers in the design phase.

MARAS – Material Recycling and Sustainability investigated the possibilities of recovery of critical materials such as precious metals and earth metals. Also the possible improvements in product design to make recycling more efficient were investigated. The study provides new insights on the (im)possibilities of recycling.

Conference on Design for Recycling
At the afternoon conference researcher Antoinette van Schaik (MARAS) presents the results of the research on Design for Recycling. Several keynote speakers (Sims Recycling, Philips, Outotec) will give their view on the processing of discarded appliances and the recovery of raw materials. The conference is free of charge.
