Electronic equipment is designed based on a number of requirements. Not only product safety, ease of use and energy efficiency but also resource efficiency and recycling play an important role. Nevertheless, the recovery of some raw materials from discarded appliances is difficult without help from the designers in the design phase.
MARAS – Material Recycling and Sustainability investigated the possibilities of recovery of critical materials such as precious metals and earth metals. Also the possible improvements in product design to make recycling more efficient were investigated. The study provides new insights on the (im)possibilities of recycling.
