Sustainability Aspects: Avoid water pollution and chemicals in dye. Replaces synthetic dyes

Dye solutions

Almost every industrially used colour is produced using fossil-based chemistry. One of the most colour-consuming industry remains textile manufacturing, which uses 1 million tons of dyes every year, this industry happens to be the second most polluting industry in the world!

Pili Biotech produces different dye colours using sugars and fermentation processes. Just like beer, in big fermentors but instead of brewing beer, Pili brews renewable colours!

The processes they use are very well-known in big scale productions of other compounds such as insulin in the pharmaceutical industry.
At the end of this process, they separate bacteria from the pigments by filtering. Conveniently, the size of a bacterium is 1000 times bigger than the targeted molecules. Bacteria grow in water, using sugar as a renewable raw material and do not generate any polluting byproduct. They do not need any fossil resources, no toxic chemicals, and need low temperatures. Thanks to the specificity and efficiency of the enzymes, Pili Biotech developed tailored colours adapted to various applications.
