Tim Jackson, author of Prosperity Without Growth, debates with a proponent of the Big Society (Jesse Norman, MP, to be confirmed). Does prosperity require higher levels of investment – in ecological and social goods, in renewables, in charities and public spaces – in the future? What is the role of the public sector in achieving this? Are we on track for the Good Life or is austerity taking us further away from the stronger, more resilient communities we all need and want? Tim Jackson is Economics Commissioner on the UK Sustainable Development Commission and Director of RESOLVE. His book Prosperity without Growth: Economics for a Finite Planet (Earthscan) comes out in paperback this month. Jesse Norman is a Conservative MP, a lifelong volunteer, and author of The Big Society: The Anatomy of the New Politics (University of Buckingham Press).
